Firstly, I would like to say how saddened I am that I cannot be there to say goodbye to my lifelong friend, as I am currently at sea.
I first met Marian when we moved to Abbey Village in 1994, I was 5 years old; our first meeting is one of the earliest memories that I have. Immediately her kind and welcoming nature ensured that my shyness was futile. Throughout my childhood, teenage years, adulthood, Marian was always there as a role model, grandparent, confidant and friend, who not only had a huge impact on my life, but also those who were fortunate enough to have met this wonderful lady. From providing me with endless amounts of garden string and canes to make bows and arrows to offering an ear and advice, Marian was able to provide it all.
I will miss our meetings at Christmas, which as a child was made even more special by the presence of her sister, Eileen, as well as Barbara; along with the visits to her social group, Friends. Having lost my grandparents at an early age, Marian was by far the clear successor to fulfil the role and that she did with ease and, of course, I had to have her in my wedding photos when my family was called forward.
Unfortunately, I had to move away to serve in the Royal Navy, however, we were in regular contact via the telephone and when I returned home, I would always go and see Marian to tell her of my travels. For me and I’m sure many others, Marian’s passing marks an end of era; I will truly miss her, one of the purest and kindest souls I will ever meet and I feel incredibly privileged to have done so. Every memory will be cherished.
